Allergen & Accuracy Notice

This notice explains, plainly, how Munchies handles allergen and dietary information, and what that means for you. If you have a food allergy or intolerance, please read it before you rely on anything Munchies tells you about a dish.

An allergen label on Munchies comes from the restaurant's own menu, with its source and its date, and may be incomplete. Where a restaurant has not said, the label reads NOT KNOWN, which is never safe. Vegetarian, vegan and halal labels are worked out by software from menu text and may be wrong. Munchies does not check any label with the restaurant, so every label may be incomplete or out of date.

It is a helpful guide. It is not a guarantee, and it must never be relied upon to keep you safe.

If you have a food allergy or intolerance, always confirm allergen and ingredient information directly with the restaurant before you order or eat any food.

1. How Munchies works out allergen and dietary information

So you understand exactly where the information comes from:

Munchies reads the menu a restaurant publishes on its own website. Where it cannot read one, allergens for that restaurant read NOT KNOWN.
Allergens are taken only from what the restaurant's menu says, such as 'contains milk' or 'may contain nuts'. Munchies does not work out an allergen from a dish's name or from what similar dishes usually contain. Software does classify dishes as vegetarian, vegan or halal from the menu text, and that classification can be wrong.
A label is a record of what a menu said on the date shown. It is not a check of the kitchen.

A menu description rarely lists every ingredient. It does not capture how a dish is prepared, or whether it shares equipment, oil or surfaces with allergens elsewhere in the kitchen. So even when our processing is working perfectly, it can only ever work from incomplete information.

2. Why it can be wrong

Munchies' allergen and dietary labels can be inaccurate in two directions, and both matter:

A false negative: Munchies fails to flag an allergen that is actually present. For someone with a serious allergy, this is potentially dangerous.
A false positive: Munchies flags an allergen, or rules out a dietary option, when it needn't have. This is inconvenient rather than dangerous.

Causes include menu descriptions that are vague or incomplete, recipes that change without the menu changing, preparation and cross-contamination that no menu describes, and, for the vegetarian, vegan and halal labels, the limits of software that reads menu text. This is precisely why the information must be treated as a starting point only.

3. What you must do if you have an allergy or intolerance

If you, or anyone you are ordering for, has a food allergy, intolerance or coeliac disease:

Do not rely on Munchies' allergen or dietary labels. Treat them as a rough guide at most.
Contact the restaurant directly before ordering, and tell them clearly about the allergy or intolerance.
Confirm with the restaurant that the specific dish is safe for you, including how it is prepared and whether there is a risk of cross-contamination.
Repeat this for every order. Recipes, suppliers and kitchen practices change.

The restaurant (the business actually preparing your food) is the only reliable source of allergen information. Under the Food Information Regulations 2014, food businesses must be able to provide accurate allergen information for the food they sell. Munchies is not a food business and cannot provide that assurance.

4. Accuracy of other information

The same honesty applies to the rest of Munchies' data.

Prices, menus, opening hours and restaurant details come from restaurants' own websites and from the sources named on each listing, and may change at any time. They can differ between Munchies and the app or restaurant you order from at the moment you order.
Always confirm the final details, particularly the price, with the app or restaurant you order from before you place an order.
Where Munchies cannot confirm a piece of information, it aims to flag this clearly rather than present a guess as fact.

Munchies shows when a menu was last read and says so where it cannot be sure. It cannot guarantee that any data is complete or error free.

5. Our position on liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Avanti Mind Ltd accepts no liability for any loss, harm, illness or injury arising from reliance on the allergen, dietary or other information presented by Munchies. Munchies is a discovery tool: it does not prepare, sell or supply food, and it cannot verify what a kitchen actually does.

Nothing in this notice limits or excludes any liability that cannot be limited or excluded under the law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. This notice does not affect your statutory rights, and it forms part of, and should be read with, our Terms of Service.

6. Help us keep data accurate

If you spot allergen, dietary or other information on Munchies that looks wrong, please tell us. We review every report and use it to correct the listing, but please understand this does not change the rule above: always confirm allergens with the restaurant directly.
